Injured hiker missing for week found in forest

A severely injured man spends seven days alone in the Connecticut wilderness. Ilana Gold reports.

A Connecticut hiker who had been missing for a week was found severely dehydrated with a broken leg just before the search for him was to end, authorities said.

A state worker found Richard Roncarti, 50, around 12:30 p.m. Thursday in the Beacon Falls section of the Naugatuck State Forest.??

He?was rescued just minutes before the search was going to be called off, officials said.?

Crews said Roncarti was stranded in the Naugatuck State Forest with severe injuries after falling 100 feet and having no food or water for seven days. The area is a few miles south of Waterbury.

Emergency crews said he was lucky to be alive.

?He looked like he had been in the weather a few days. He was beat up pretty good,? Chief Michael Pratt, of the Beacon Falls Fire Department, said.?

Pratt said the hiker from Watertown had no idea he was stranded in the Naugatuck State Forest for so long.

Roncarti?s family reported him missing last Thursday night. His vehicle was found over the weekend, parked in the parking lot of the state forest, but there was no sign of him until yesterday.

?He said, 'I?ve been out here seven days.' After seven days you don?t think positive. You don?t think you're going to find someone alive,? Pratt admitted.

Roncarti was taken to Waterbury Hospital on Thursday and is being treated for non-life threatening injuries. He is expected to be released in the next few days.

Firefighters said he had a broken leg, possibly a broken hip, and he was severely dehydrated.

?Yes it could have been a lot worse ... it could have been fatal,? said Pratt.

Emergency crews said Roncarti was nearly impossible to find because he didn?t have a cell phone.?

They want all hikers to make sure they were prepared for a worst-case scenario when they hit the trails this summer.?

With her assertion this week that Russia is sending attack helicopters to Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad to use against his own people, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton may have been out to increase pressure on Russia to drop its resistance to international action in the Syrian conflict.

But an unintended consequence has been to feed certain flames that Secretary Clinton herself and other officials have been trying to beat back ? namely, that it is long past time for the United States to intervene to stop the Syrian bloodshed.

That view has been expressed by prominent hawks and even some liberal interventionists for months. But it got a boost Thursday when former US ambassador to the United Nations Bill Richardson said the US would have no choice but to start arming Syria?s rebels if indeed Russia is sending attack helicopters to President Assad?s forces.

?This is a humanitarian crisis going on in Syria,? Mr. Richardson, who is?known for his diplomatic forays into North Korea,?told Fox News Latino?s Juan Williams. ?If the Russians get in there, and there?s evidence of that, I think that would be the defining step to move forward with arming the rebels.?

So is the furor over Russian helicopters likely to be the tipping point that shifts the Obama administration into a more interventionist mode? (Think last summer?s Libya campaign here.)

Certainly, the administration has not backed off Clinton?s charges. In response to Russian claims that no new helicopters are being sent to Syria, and that whatever arms are being sent are for national air-defense purposes only, State Department officials acknowledge that Clinton may have been talking about older, refurbished helicopters ? but still attack helicopters ? being sent back to Syria.

But neither Clinton nor anyone else in the administration has gone the next step to say Russia?s provisioning of Assad with heavy weapons would trigger a more robust US response, such as arming the rebels? Syrian Free Army.

Sony Alpha NEX-F3

Despite having a rather odd progression in model names, the Sony Alpha NEX-F3 ($599.99 direct with 18-55mm?lens) is the direct successor to our Editors' Choice Sony Alpha NEX-C3 ($649.99, 4.5 stars). Like its predecessor, the F3 sports a 16-megapixel APS-C image sensor that delivers top-notch images in challenging light, and can focus and fire off images with impressive speed. It adds a built-in flash, an LCD that tilts all the way to face the front of the camera, and support for the FDAEV1S Electronic Viewfinder ($349.99), and in doing so wrangles our Editors' Choice award for entry-level compact interchangeable lens cameras away from the NEX-C3.

Design and Features
Taking many of its design cues from the NEX-C3, the NEX-F3 sports a deeper grip, like the one found on the mid-range NEX-5N ($699.99, 4.5 stars). It's a bit larger and heavier than either camera, measuring 2.6 by 4.6 by 1.7 inches and weighing 11.1 ounces without a lens. (The NEX-5N is 2.4 by 4.4 by 1.6 inches, 9.5 ounces.) The rear LCD tilts, but unlike other NEX cameras, it can face all the way to the front for self portraits. When placed in that position it automatically activates a 3-second self timer and?flips the image horizontally, so that you get the natural feeling of looking in a mirror. Of course, once the actual photo is taken it is saved to the memory card in a normal orientation. The front-facing capability does have a cost. The downward tilt, which is useful when taking shots with the camera above your head, is not as deep as in other models, and if you opt to use the EVF, it blocks a good portion of the view when the LCD faces front.

The larger body also makes room for a built-in flash. It's identical to the one found on the pro-level Sony Alpha NEX-7 ($1,349.99, 4.5 stars), and is hinged so that you can bounce light off of a ceiling to add softer illumination to a scene.

Despite being small for an interchangeable lens camera, the NEX-F3 packs an APS-C image sensor?the same size found in most D-SLRs. Compact systems cameras that use smaller sensors, like the Nikon J1 ($649.95, 3.5 stars) and the Olympus PEN E-PL3 ($699.99, 3.5 stars) have smaller lenses since the physical area that needs to be covered with light isn't as great, but they sacrifice some of the ability to create shallow depth of field. The 18-55mm (27-82mm equivalent) zoom lens included with the F3 isn't quite as large as a typical D-SLR kit zoom, but it's pretty close.

One area in which Micro Four Thirds trumps the NEX system is lens availability?Sony has released a number of lenses for NEX cameras in the past year, but it still lags behind the Micro Four Thirds library. The NEX system currently lacks a fast f/1.4 lens, and the longest telephoto optic only reaches 210mm.

Aside from its new hinge mechanism, the rear LCD is unchanged from the NEX-C3. It's a 3-inch display with a 921k-dot resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio. The Live View frame is justified left, while a strip to the right displays the current function of the camera's programmable controls. You can customize three soft keys to suit your needs. My typical configuration is to set the bottom button as a focus assist, as I often use manual focus lenses with the NEX system, and I set the center button to bring up the Shooting Mode menu and use the right button to adjust ISO. In addition to the programmable controls, the camera has dedicated buttons for Drive Mode, EV Compensation, playback, and movie recording.

The menu system is vast and sprawling. Thankfully, once you have the camera configured to your liking you won't have to spend too much time adjusting things, but you may find yourself scratching your head in order to locate specific settings. Hitting Menu on the back of the camera brings up six options: Shoot Mode, Camera, Image Size, Brightness/Color, Playback, and Setup. If you can remember that Focus options are in Camera, Exposure controls in Brightness/Color, and any sort of customization options are in Setup, you should be good to go.

Auto Portrait Framing and Clear Image Zoom options are both located in the Camera menu, but are only active if you're shooting in JPG mode. The former works automatically, saving a cropped version of a portrait alongside your original shot?both in full 16-megapixel resolution. You'll have to activate Clear Image Zoom, which effectively doubles the focal length of your lens via an in-camera crop, although it can be programmed as a soft key function. Unlike traditional cropping, the image is saved as a full-resolution file, with some in-camera?interpolation to better preserve detail. It isn't as sharp as with a telephoto lens, but if you're a JPG shooter and don't plan on making large prints, there is absolutely no reason not to use the function to increase the reach of your lens?the resulting files will be more than adequate for online sharing, and will retain enough detail for printing in, say, a photo book.

'Catching Fire' In IMAX: Time To Embrace The Big, Big Screen?

In this week's Hobnobbing, we wonder if the new format is really worth the five extra bucks.

We interrupt your regularly scheduled Finnick speculation to bring you this special announcement: "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" will light up IMAX theaters come November 2013! (OK, the news broke Wednesday, but I don't write my column until Thursday.) Anyway, this is big (as in 70 feet tall) news ... if you like that sort of thing.

While "The Hunger Games" was re-mastered for IMAX screens, director Francis Lawrence intends to shoot entire "Catching Fire" sequences in the larger-than-life format. As my colleague Kevin P. Sullivan noted, this will be only the sixth major studio film to be partially shot in IMAX — news to which my reaction was roughly, "Okie doke..."

See, I've never really understood the appeal of IMAX. Isn't it just for people with poor eyesight who need to see things really large? And why should I pay roughly five extra bucks for the privilege? I have good vision!

To wit, I've never purposely sought out an IMAX screening. One time on vacation in Seattle my friend insisted we see "The Lion King" (nearly a decade after its initial release) in IMAX, and since I didn't want to be a chump, I went along. I've probably been to one IMAX movie since (it wasn't "Avatar," by the way, my hometown theater is lame), but I can't help but wonder if I'm missing something.

According to conventional wisdom and my previously mentioned colleague Kevin (who graciously humored my IMAX questions and concerns), the format is considered the height of immersive movie-going technology. (So much more worth the price than 3-D, he says.) Everything's huge! Everything's so detailed! Everything else in the theater just disappears! It's like that guy in the front row wearing the bowler hat festooned with Christmas lights doesn't exist! Fine, fine. I get it. And I'm willing to give it another try because Katniss and Peeta deserve as much. (It will also give me another ready-made column idea come next Thanksgiving!)

And with speculation swirling that the IMAX-friendly filming will likely focus on the nifty new Quarter Quell arena, I'm simultaneously thrilled and sick to my stomach over the idea of being completely immersed in the bloody battle. Nonetheless, let the IMAX Games begin!

"Catching Fire" hits theaters November 22, 2013.

Study finds Massachusetts health reform leads to increased inpatient surgical procedures

(Boston) - Researchers from Boston University Schools of Medicine and Public Health (BUSM, BUSPH), along with the VA Boston Healthcare System and Harvard Medical School, have found inpatient medical procedures increased more among non-elderly, lower- and medium- income populations, Hispanics and whites, after health care reform went into effect in Massachusetts. The findings, which currently appear in Medical Care, suggest improved access to outpatient care for vulnerable subpopulations since health care reform took effect.

The 2006 Massachusetts health reform implementation substantially decreased the number of uninsured in the state. Yet, little is known about the reform's impact on actual healthcare utilization among poor and minority populations, particularly for inpatient surgical procedures that are commonly initiated by outpatient physician referral.

Researchers used discharge data on Massachusetts hospitalizations for 21 months preceding and following health reform implementation (July 2006December 2007). They identified all non-obstetrical major therapeutic procedures for patients 40 years and older and for which more than 70 percent of hospitalizations were initiated by an outpatient physician referral. Specifically, they compared pre- and post-reform utilization of major therapeutic inpatient surgical procedures predominantly scheduled by outpatient referrals among non-elderly Massachusetts adults, and found greater overall increases for lower income cohorts compared to the highest income cohort, and for Hispanics compared to whites.

"Prior to reform, both blacks and Hispanics had lower rates of these procedures compared to whites. As 90 percent of all surgeries came from outpatient physician referral, these findings suggest a meaningful improvement in access to outpatient care for the surgeries studied, especially those living in lower income areas," explained senior author Nancy Kressin, PhD, professor of medicine at BUSM.

Findings of significant post-reform expansion in procedure use for Hispanics and lower area income patients are consistent with the relatively larger gains in insurance coverage among these subpopulations. These findings suggest potentially improved access to outpatient care and may reflect demand built up prior to reform when individuals were uninsured. "Whether such improved access a crucially important first step to improving equity in access and outcomes translates into improved clinical outcomes at a reasonable cost merits further study," added Kressin.

Here at Tecca, we've seen some?pretty impressive heists in our time, from the guy who?stole $450,000 in fake currency to a thief who nonchalantly drove off with?$1.7 million in unpopular tablet computers. But neither of those really hold a candle to these thieves, unsuccessful though they were: A band of Romanian criminals attempted to hijack the contents of truck as it speeds down the highway.

This video was taped by Romania's Department for Organised Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT), who's trying to build a case against the would-be robbers. In it, you can see a car pull up behind a moving truck. Maintaining a constant speed, the robbers climb out the car's sunroof and work on opening the backdoor of the moving truck.

Presumably, the truck didn't have much worth stealing in it ? the robbers left the scene without taking anything. Still, the?Prince of Persia-esque stunt made these robbers all instant stars, not that they wouldn't have preferred a degree of anonymity in their line of work.

Lessons from epigenome evolution

ScienceDaily (June 11, 2012) ? The sequencing of the human genome has provided a wealth of genetic information, yet the goal of understanding the function of every gene remains outstanding. New research from the University of Illinois published in Cell suggests determining the purpose of genes through a new method they call "comparative epigenomics."

"Comparative epigenomics is to use interspecies comparison of DNA and histone modifications -- as an approach for annotation of the regulatory genome," says Sheng Zhong, of the Institute for Genomic Biology and Department of Bioengineering at the University of Illinois.

While the genome of an organism contains all its genes, it is the epigenome that decides which are expressed, or "turned on." Though genomic science has long focused on comparative genomics -- comparing the genomes of similar species and finding the commonalities to determine how common traits are regulated -- comparative epigenetics provides a more in-depth look at regulatory functions.

The researchers, led by Zhong, in collaboration with Ting Wang at Washington University, Harris Lewin, and Franklin West at University of Georgia, focused their work on three species: humans, mice, and pigs. By analyzing 9 epigenomic marks in pluripotent stem cells, they were able to create an epigenomic map for each which they could then compare.

The team concluded that, with proper analysis procedures, traces of interspecies epigenomic conservation could be identified. They then demonstrated that the conserved epigenetic markers can be effectively used to annotate the genome, clarifying the genome's regulatory function.

Understanding the genome is one of the most pressing problems for science, and this study sheds light on a promising alternative method. "Comparative epigenomics enables us to find more clues from evolution about the functions of our genomes," adds Shu Xiao, the first author of the paper.

California official accused of hitting boy with belt

A California irrigation district official was arrested after a YouTube video was posted allegedly showing him hit his stepson with a belt after the boy failed to catch a ball.

Anthony Sanchez, a director of the Imperial Irrigation District,?was arrested Friday afternoon on suspicion of felony child abuse after turning himself in, the Imperial Valley Press of El Centro reported. He posted bond of $100,000 and was released.

Imperial County sheriff's officials told the Press that they were alerted early Thursday to a video showing Sanchez throwing a ball to his stepson, then hitting the boy with a belt. The incident allegedly occurred on Wednesday.

Sanchez's lawyer, Ryan Childers, said that Sanchez had cooperated with investigators, the Press reported. Childers said he was confident that the District Attorney's Office would not charge Sanchez with such a serious crime.

Sanchez was elected to the irrigation district's board of directors in 2006 and reelected in 2010, according to biographical information on the district's website. Imperial County is in far southeastern California.
