ballsam ? Antiques: Auction Lots, Including Frank Family Letters, to ...

? A 1960s concrete map of the Gettysburg battlefield, studded with light bulbs that flashed to show troop movements, had been chopped up when the government auctioned it in September. The 12-ton topographical piece had been removed from a battlefield visitor center and stashed in trailers, but after preservationists set up a protest Web site, savetheelectricmap.com, the General Services Administration offered it in an online auction, illustrated with a few grainy photos.

Scott Roland, a developer in nearby Hanover, Pa., paid about $14,000 for it, bidding against an unidentified rival. The segments have been hoisted by crane and reassembled at a 1950s brick bank in Hanover, which is being converted into a conference and visitor center. Mr. Roland?s team plans to reactivate the map by next summer, in time for Hanover?s 250th anniversary and the 150th anniversary of Civil War battles in the region. The mechanisms will be rebuilt from scratch. ?The wiring is all cut and ruined,? Mr. Roland said in a phone interview.

? In March furniture historians were surprised to learn that the Centennial Museum at the University of Texas at El Paso had pairs of 1880s gilded chairs from a Vanderbilt home lingering in storage since the 1960s. A luxury-cabinetmaking team in Manhattan, the German-born half-brothers Christian and Gustave Herter, had produced the armchairs, studded with mother-of-pearl, and leafy side chairs for William H. Vanderbilt?s town house on Fifth Avenue.

The museum sold the four for a total of about $363,000 through Charlton Hall Auctioneers in South Carolina. Margot Johnson, a Manhattan dealer specializing in Herter material, acquired them for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. (She kept one armchair for her inventory.) The Met is planning conservation work on the gilding and fringed velvety red upholstery and an exhibition about Herter achievements under Vanderbilt patronage.

? In the 1950s the Austrian-born actor Joseph Schildkraut played Anne Frank?s father, Otto, on screen, and he amassed research files of Frank family letters dating to the 1930s. ?His widow consigned the material to a Doyle New York auction, slated for November, with an estimate of $20,000 to $30,000.

The Anne Frank House in Amsterdam persuaded the family to cancel the auction, and it raised an undisclosed sum in the estimate range to acquire the lot, which also includes movie memorabilia. The paperwork documents that Otto Frank desperately feared Nazism before the war and tried to emigrate through contacts in Britain and the United States.

?It?s an important part of the history of the Frank family,? Teresien da Silva, the head of collections at the Anne Frank House, said in a phone interview. The museum is sorting the archive for Web site postings and exhibitions about the family?s prewar life and movie versions of their story.

? Bradford Edwards, an artist and art collector long based in Vietnam, focused on 1960s Zippo cigarette lighters that belonged to American soldiers. The metal sheaths are engraved with longings for sex, marijuana, enemies? violent deaths, peace and home. Mr. Edwards consigned 282 of them to a June sale at Cowan?s Auctions in Cincinnati (estimated at $30,000 to $50,000 for the group).

When they did not sell, the auction house owner, Wes Cowan, persuaded the Manhattan collector John R. Monsky to spend $35,250 for the lot, so that it would not be broken up. Mr. Cowan said, in effect, ?This is your patriotic duty,? Mr. Monsky said during a recent tour of the collection, which was laid out in neat rows on his dining table, like a military cemetery. ?Each one of them is like a little emotion,? he said, while hunting for a favorite, marked with a peace sign and ?WHY ME.?

He plans to have them mounted for traveling exhibitions, with searchable databases of engravings and owners? biographies.

? Rumors among ?Star Trek? fans had persisted for decades that a huge 1960s prop from the television series had survived. The model for the show?s Galileo shuttlecraft, about 24 feet long, was used for scenes of crews and visitors in transit; assorted villains destroyed it in episode after episode.

The actual wood and metal box ended up left outdoors in Ohio and was badly eroded when it came up for sale in June at Kiki Auctions in Canton, Ohio. Adam Schneider, a management consultant in New York, paid about $70,000 for it, and Master Shipwrights in Atlantic Highlands, N.J., is now restoring it. (Mr. Schneider collects spaceship models from ?Star Trek? sets and displays them at home, complete with reactivated lights glowing in the windows.)

Galileo?s metal frame and landing gear are salvageable, but the shell and trapezoidal sliding doors will have to be largely replaced. Mr. Schneider is researching every detail, down to the paint used on the original exterior lettering, he said during a recent tour of the shipwrights? workshop. He plans to donate the vehicle to a museum. ?It?s a fabulous children?s exhibit, in the right hands,? he said.

? No one is sure who made a little blue glass creamer now on view at the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, N.Y. But it was probably produced in Philadelphia and definitely after 1794, the date on an American penny rattling around in the creamer?s hollow base. In August it sold for $82,600 at Northeast Auctions in Manchester, N.H. The consignor?s family had acquired it in the 1860s, and the penny?s date may have commemorated an original owner?s birthday or anniversary.

Corning owns other glass vessels with coins sealed inside, but American pieces are extraordinarily rare. The museum also invested in another major blue glass object this year: a profile of Akhenaten molded around 1340 B.C. (it cost about $332,000 at Christie?s in London in April), now on view with a glass head, most likely of his forebear Amenhotep II.

FBI removes many redactions in Marilyn Monroe file

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? FBI files on Marilyn Monroe that could not be located earlier this year have been found and re-issued, revealing the names of some of the movie star's communist-leaning acquaintances who drew concern from government officials and her own entourage.

But the files, which previously had been heavily redacted, do not contain any new information about Monroe's death 50 years ago. Letters and news clippings included in the file show the bureau was aware of theories the actress had been killed, but they do not show that any effort was undertaken to investigate the claims. Los Angeles authorities concluded Monroe's death was a probable suicide.

Recently obtained by The Associated Press through the Freedom of Information Act, the updated FBI files do show the extent the agency was monitoring Monroe for ties to communism in the years before her death in August 1962.

The records reveal that some in Monroe's inner circle were concerned about her association with Frederick Vanderbilt Field, who was disinherited from his wealthy family over his leftist views.

A trip to Mexico earlier that year to shop for furniture brought Monroe in contact with Field, who was living in the country with his wife in self-imposed exile. Informants reported to the FBI that a "mutual infatuation" had developed between Field and Monroe, which caused concern among some in her inner circle, including her therapist, the files state.

"This situation caused considerable dismay among Miss Monroe's entourage and also among the (American Communist Group in Mexico)," the file states. It includes references to an interior decorator who worked with Monroe's analyst reporting her connection to Field to the doctor.

Field's autobiography devotes an entire chapter to Monroe's Mexico trip, "An Indian Summer Interlude." He mentions that he and his wife accompanied Monroe on shopping trips and meals and he only mentions politics once in a passage on their dinnertime conversations.

"She talked mostly about herself and some of the people who had been or still were important to her," Field wrote in "From Right to Left." ''She told us about her strong feelings for civil rights, for black equality, as well as her admiration for what was being done in China, her anger at red-baiting and McCarthyism and her hatred of (FBI director) J. Edgar Hoover."

Under Hoover's watch, the FBI kept tabs on the political and social lives of many celebrities, including Frank Sinatra, Charlie Chaplin and Monroe's ex-husband Arthur Miller. The bureau has also been involved in numerous investigations about crimes against celebrities, including threats against Elizabeth Taylor, an extortion case involving Clark Gable and more recently, trying to solve who killed rapper Notorious B.I.G.

The AP had sought the removal of redactions from Monroe's FBI files earlier this year as part of a series of stories on the 50th anniversary of Monroe's death. The FBI had reported that it had transferred the files to a National Archives facility in Maryland, but archivists said the documents had not been received. A few months after requesting details on the transfer, the FBI released an updated version of the files that eliminate dozens of redactions.

For years, the files have intrigued investigators, biographers and those who don't believe Monroe's death at her Los Angeles area home was a suicide.

A 1982 investigation by the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office found no evidence of foul play after reviewing all available investigative records, but noted that the FBI files were "heavily censored."

That characterization intrigued the man who performed Monroe's autopsy, Dr. Thomas Noguchi. While the DA investigation concluded he conducted a thorough autopsy, Noguchi has conceded that no one will likely ever know all the details of Monroe's death. The FBI files and confidential interviews conducted with the actress' friends that have never been made public might help, he wrote in his 1983 memoir "Coroner."

"On the basis of my own involvement in the case, beginning with the autopsy, I would call Monroe's suicide 'very probable,'" Noguchi wrote. "But I also believe that until the complete FBI files are made public and the notes and interviews of the suicide panel released, controversy will continue to swirl around her death."

Monroe's file begins in 1955 and mostly focuses on her travels and associations, searching for signs of leftist views and possible ties to communism. One entry, which previously had been almost completely redacted, concerned intelligence that Monroe and other entertainers sought visas to visit Russia that year.

The file continues up until the months before her death, and also includes several news stories and references to Norman Mailer's biography of the actress, which focused on questions about whether Monroe was killed by the government.

For all the focus on Monroe's closeness to suspected communists, the bureau never found any proof she was a member of the party.

"Subject's views are very positively and concisely leftist; however, if she is being actively used by the Communist Party, it is not general knowledge among those working with the movement in Los Angeles," a July 1962 entry in Monroe's file states.

In 2012, we turned to Wikipedia to learn about ... Facebook?

12 hrs.

Unlike most major Internet brands, Wikipedia had no year-end top-10 list to share. But that's not to say there isn't a list of most viewed Wikipedia articles of 2012. It took a software engineer with a bit of spare time to gather up the data, and share the results, equal parts predictable and off-the-wall.?What does this list say about us?

Based on?Johan Gunnarsson's analysis of Wikipedia logs, it seems that?the most viewed articles on the English version of Wikipedia are lined up as follows:

  • 1. Facebook - 32,647,942 views
  • 2.?Wiki -?29,613,759?views
  • 3.?Deaths in 2012 -?25,418,587?views
  • 4.?One Direction -?22,351,637?views
  • 5.?The Avengers (2012 film) -?22,268,644?views
  • 6.?Fifty Shades of Grey -?21,779,423?views
  • 7.?2012 phenomenon -?20,619,920?views
  • 8.?The Dark Knight Rises -?18,882,885?views
  • 9.?Google -?18,508,719?views
  • 10.?The Hunger Games -?18,431,626?views

While we're not surprised to see iconic pop culture phenomena like musical sensation One Direction, the all-star movie?"The?Avengers," the risque literary?trilogy "Fifty Shades of Grey" and of course the?inescapable "Hunger Games" series?appear,?we did scratch our heads about Facebook and Google, and ... "Wiki"?

Wikimedia spokesman Jay Walsh explained the popularity of these items to All Things D's Liz Gannes as likely being due to users who might type "Facebook" or similar into a search engine built into "their browsers intending to go to the site and end up on Wikipedia."?Either that, he says, or there's simply "general, high-level interest and curiosity" about the history of some of these websites and services.

We'll buy the accidental typing explanation over the "high-level of?interest" one.

While most of the top 100 most-viewed?English Wikipedia articles centered around pop culture and current events, some articles raise eyebrows for feeling a bit out of place. Entries on the Illuminati (No. 33), elocution (No. 34)?and g-forces (No. 83)?cropped up on the heels of expected entries like Mitt Romney (No. 22) and?Justin Bieber (No. 25).

The more immature individuals among us may find it amusing that entries on sex (No. 18) and human penis size (No. 82) made it into the list of 100?most viewed.?Android fanboys may flaunt the fact that an article about the mobile operating system hit the list at No. 70, while no entries about iOS made it into the top 100. (Though Steve Jobs did come in at No. 64.)

At least some people were using Wikipedia for its intended purpose, to cheat on homework assignments: Historical topics from?Albert Einstein (No. 98)?to the Hatfield-McCoy feud (No. 91) pepper the list.

When looking at the?most viewed articles in languages other than English, we find that the obsession with major Web properties and pop culture extends beyond their idiom of origin. Facebook led the Spanish top 10, which also includes One Direction. German language readers were particularly interested in the?TV shows "How I Met Your Mother," "The Big Bang Theory," "Two And A Half Men," and "Game Of Thrones" ? all which made it into their top 10.

And speaking of Bieber,?those with an irrational dislike for the teen?heartthrob may find it comforting to know that he?only made the top 10 in Norwegian and Danish. He failed to reach single digits in any other language, and sits at No. 25 on the list of the most viewed English Wikipedia articles.

"Gangnam Style," the ear-worm that beat Bieber's "Baby" to?a billion views on YouTube, appears to have only made it onto one top-100 list?? the English one ? taking the No. 21 spot with a mere?13,129,876 views.

IS CONVENTIONAL INVESTING WISDOM COMPLETELY WRONG ...

?Inflation is when you pay fifteen dollars for the ten-dollar haircut you used to get for five dollars when you had hair.? Sam Ewing (Brainyquote.com)

Zvi Bodie and Rachelle Taqqu authored the revolutionary Risk Less and Prosper book about life cycle investing. This book flips conventional investing wisdom on its head and begins the investing conversation with your goals. The authors continue the discussion with ideas to protect your precious capital from the ravages of inflation and from the volatility of the financial markets.

Protect your retirement from inflation

Conventional investing advice recommends choosing an asset allocation, for example 60 percent in stock index mutual funds and 40 percent in bond mutual funds, and regularly transferring money from your paycheck into these funds. This strategy assumes that in spite of the ups and downs of the investment markets, when its time to retire, you?ll have a nice nest egg saved up to supplement social security. It sounds nice and easy; actually, I?m a big proponent of the traditional approach.

So, what inspired me to bring up this topic which is contrary to the traditional investment ideas promoted on this website?

THERE?S MORE THAN ONE WAY TO SAVE AND INVEST FOR THE FUTURE

Safety First

What if you devised an investment plan that was likely to meet your basic living expenses? And instead of allocating lots of money into stock market investments, you decided to save up the minimum you require in retirement and kept those funds safe and secure from the ravages of inflation?

Conventional investment advisers recommend targeting an amount of retirement dollars and using historical stock and bond market averages to project into the future how to reach that goal. The problem with this approach is that historical returns may not continue into the future. Not only that, but what if you want to retire at the same time that the stock market experiences a cyclical decline in value? In both cases, your retirement dollars will fall short of your minimal living standard.

Life Cycle Investing Offers an Alternative

Life cycle investing protects against the worst case scenario, living longer than your money.

Consider the income from your job, both now and in future years. Tally it up and you may be surprised at the total. If you make $50,000 per year and expect to make that amount for 40 years (a rather simple example), you?ll earn $2,000,000 during your lifetime. That?s an example of your human capital or earning power. Your lifetime goal is to transfer some of that money from your earning years into the future, when you won?t be earning.

Simply put, smooth out your cash flow so that you can reach your current and future spending and lifestyle goals.

What is the Minimum Cost of your Future Living Expenses?

Spend a few minutes calculating the minimum cost of your retirement lifestyle. With zero interest rates don?t worry about adjusting these numbers. Next estimate how much you expect to receive from pensions and social security. Find the difference between your minimum lifestyle expenses and your income, and those are the minimum funds you need for retirement.

By focusing on the estimated costs of living in the future, you have a realistic idea of how many ?safe dollars? you?ll need during your retirement. Protect these dollars from inflation and you have a plan to meet a minimum standard of living. If this number is greater than you currently save, consider working a few years longer or saving more.

Any additional funds can be allocated to risky investments such as stocks or real estate funds.

This approach attacks the problems with traditional retirement investing; your historical returns are too low or you retire during a recession or downturn in the stock market.

Where to Place your Safe Investment Dollars?

I?ve written previously about the importance of inflation protected investing. In?today?s?investment environment with historically low interest and inflation rates, ?it may seem unimportant to worry about inflation. Yet, even a low 2 percent annual rate of inflation can reduce the purchasing power of $100 to $54 over 30 years. The underlying premise of preserving your purchasing power and lifestyle from your working years into retirement is grounded in the theory that your safe dollars will cover your living costs into the future.

How to Protect Your Funds from Inflation

Treasury Inflation Protected Securities and Government I Bonds?shield your purchasing power against inflation. Invest your savings in these two investments and protect your minimum standard of living throughout your lifetime.

With today?s low interest rates, Government I Bonds pay 1.76% through April, 2013, but that return adjusts every 6 months to account for changes in inflation. When inflation increases, so will the return on I bonds. Buy $10,000 (the maximum amount allowed by the government) of I bonds annually over your working life and at the end of 40 years, you have $400,000.

This $400,000 is adjusted for inflation and is not subject to the ups and downs of the stock market. Use these funds along with social security to cover your minimum required expenses.

Any additional savings can be invested in the stock market without fear of outliving your minimal retirement expenses.

Can?t Get Enough Inflation Protected Investing?

Have you invested in Government I bonds or TIPS?

What?s your investment strategy for retirement planning?

(AP) ? A muted version of a winter storm that has killed more than a dozen people across the eastern half of the country plodded across the Northeast on Thursday, trapping airliners in snow or mud and frustrating travelers still trying to return home after Christmas.

The storm, which was blamed for at least 16 deaths farther south and west, brought plenty of wind, rain and snow to the Northeast when it blew in Wednesday night. Lights generally remained on and cars mostly stayed on the road, unlike many harder-hit places including Arkansas, where 200,000 homes and businesses lost power.

By afternoon, the precipitation had stopped in parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Massachusetts, though snow continued to fall in upstate New York and northern New England. Parts of snow-savvy New Hampshire expected as much as 18 inches.

Dale Lamprey, who was clearing off the sidewalk outside the legislative office building in Concord, already had several hours of shoveling under his belt by 8:30 a.m. Thursday and didn't expect it to get much better.

"I'm going to be shoveling all day, just trying to keep up with the snow," he said. "Which is impossible."

The Northeast's heaviest snowfall was expected to be in northern Pennsylvania, upstate New York and inland sections of several New England states before the storm heads into Canada on Friday, National Weather Service spokesman David Roth said.

While the East Coast's largest cities ? New York, Philadelphia and Boston ? saw mostly high winds and cold rain, other areas experienced a messy mix of rain and snow that slowed commuters and those still heading home from holiday trips. Some inbound flights were delayed in Philadelphia and New York's LaGuardia, but the weather wasn't leading to delays at other major East Coast airports.

Forty-two students traveling to London and Dublin were stuck in the Nashville airport thanks to weather in the Northeast. The frustrated students, from universities in Tennessee and Kentucky, were supposed to leave Wednesday and arrive in London on Thursday.

Joe Woolley, spokesman for the Cooperative Center for Study Abroad, said he hopes he can get them there just one day late. "It's a two-week program, so it's shortened already," he said.

On New York's Long Island, a Southwest Airlines jet bound for Tampa, Fla., veered off a taxiway and got stuck in mud Thursday morning. Officials said there were no injuries to the 129 passengers and five crew members. Though the area received heavy rain overnight, Southwest spokesman Paul Flanigan said it wasn't clear whether that played a role.

In Pittsburgh, a flight that landed safely during the storm Wednesday night got stuck in several inches of snow on the tarmac about two hours. The American Airlines flight arrived between 8 and 9 p.m., but then ran over a snow patch and got stuck.

Earlier, the storm system spawned tornadoes on Christmas along the Gulf Coast, startling people like Bob and Sherry Sims of Mobile, Ala., who had just finished dinner.

"We heard that very distinct sound, like a freight train," said Bob Sims, who lost electricity but was grateful that he fared better than neighbors whose roofs were peeled away and porches smashed by falling trees. In Georgiana, Ala., an 81-year-old man died Wednesday, a day after a tree fell on his home, emergency officials said.

Deaths from wind-toppled trees also were reported in Texas and Louisiana, but car crashes caused most of the fatalities. Two people were killed in Kentucky crashes, a New York man was killed after his pickup truck skidded on an icy road in northwest Pennsylvania, and an Ohio teenager died after losing control of her car and smashing into an oncoming snowplow.

In Arkansas, where two people died in a head-on collision, some of those who lost electricity could be without it for as long as a week because of snapped poles and wires after ice and 10 inches of snow coated power lines, said the state's largest utility, Entergy Arkansas.

Farther east, the storm knocked out power to more than 7,000 homes and businesses in Maryland, and utilities were preparing for more outages as the wind picked up. In New Jersey, gusts of more than 70 mph were recorded along the coast, and the weather service issued a flood warning for some coastal areas. There were about 800 power outages in Vermont, but only a handful in neighboring New Hampshire.

Schools on break and workers taking holiday vacations meant that many people could avoid messy commutes, but those who had to travel were urged to avoid it.

Few truckers were stopping into a TravelCenters of America truck stop in Willington, Conn., near the Massachusetts border early Thursday. Usually 20 to 30 an hour stop in overnight, but high winds and slushy roads had cut that to two to three people an hour.

"A lot of people are staying off the road," said Louis Zalewa, 31, who works there selling gasoline and staffing the store. "I think people are being smart."

Forget Stocks? Shilling's Backing Bonds for 2013 ... - Yahoo! Finance

Gary Shilling has been a long-time advocate of bonds, and he's not changing his tune as the market heads into the new year.

Stocks, up four years running, will be trying in 2013 to extend the rally that started all the way back in March 2009. But Shilling, president of economic consulting firm A. Gary Shilling & Co., says the impending recession requires investors to be cautious about equities.

"I think you play it with a 'risk-off' kind of approach," he says in an interview with The Daily Ticker. "And that means you probably look for more appreciation in long-term Treasury bonds, which have been a favorite of mine since 1981."

Shilling has been a believer in bonds for more than three decades and he's not altering that position now.

"Stocks are vulnerable," he notes. Looking ahead, he's expecting the yield on the 30-year Treasury to decline to 2% and for the yield on the 10-year note to drop to 1% from current levels.

Related: Bill Gross: Fed's "Hot Air" Will Keep Bond Bubble Afloat in 2013

Shilling isn't after yield here, so his goal is to make money from higher bond prices (bond yields move in the opposite direction of bond prices), and he's reiterating his view that a downturn is imminent.

"I've only bought Treasuries for appreciation," he says. "I couldn't care less what the yield is, as long as it's going down."

Shilling's concerned about lower corporate earnings next year, which have the potential to drag on stock prices. His worries are three-fold: A global recession will occur, hurting revenue and by extension earnings; profit margins are about as good as they can get with companies having already implemented extensive cost-cutting; a strong dollar will weigh on U.S. corporations' foreign profits and overseas operating expenses.

Shilling continues to remain bearish on the housing market because, as he sees it, the market has at least one major factor working against it.

Related: Housing Recovery Has Legs for Another 2-4 Years: Mark Zandi

"The fundamental problem with housing is still excess inventories," he says. In other words, there are too many vacant homes, whether they're being officially reported in the market or not.

"We think in total there's probably 1.9 million extra houses over and above normal working levels, and excess inventories are the mortal enemy of prices," he adds.

The end of the year prompts most homeowners to prepare for the onset of the coldest weather, and the resulting increase in heating bills. Energy companies also anticipate this trend and begin offering incentives for their customers to have their home?s energy efficiency evaluated and to make energy-saving improvements as well.

Now is the time to check your power bill or call your energy representative and ask if rebates are available on home energy audits and the installation of weatherization products that can prevent air transfer, increasing the efficiency of your HVAC system. The home improvements themselves will reduce your monthly energy bills, but power companies often offer rebates to customers who can demonstrate that they have taken measure to reduce their energy consumption.

You might also check with your tax professional as the new tax season approaches to find out if there are any incentives you qualify for if you have improvements made to your insulation. Some years are more lucrative than others, but it is always worth looking into when you are considering contracting for weatherization and home improvement services.

Don?t wait and miss an opportunity to save! Call your power company today, then call Atlantic Spray Systems, Inc. for a free quote and an evaluation of your weatherization and energy-saving options!
