Walking and running again after spinal cord injury

ScienceDaily (May 31, 2012) ? Rats with spinal cord injuries and severe paralysis are now walking (and running) thanks to researchers at EPFL. Published in the June 1, 2012 issue of Science, the results show that a severed section of the spinal cord can make a comeback when its own innate intelligence and regenerative capacity is awakened. The study, begun five years ago at the University of Zurich, points to a profound change in our understanding of the central nervous system. According to lead author Gr?goire Courtine, it is yet unclear if similar rehabilitation techniques could work for humans, but the observed nerve growth hints at new methods for treating paralysis.

"After a couple of weeks of neurorehabilitation with a combination of a robotic harness and electrical-chemical stimulation, our rats are not only voluntarily initiating a walking gait, but they are soon sprinting, climbing up stairs and avoiding obstacles when stimulated," explains Courtine, who holds the International Paraplegic Foundation (IRP) Chair in Spinal Cord Repair at EPFL.

Waking up the spinal cord

It is well known that the brain and spinal cord can adapt and recover from moderate injury, a quality known as neuroplasticity. But until now the spinal cord expressed so little plasticity after severe injury that recovery was impossible. Courtine's research proves that, under certain conditions, plasticity and recovery can take place in these severe cases -- but only if the dormant spinal column is first woken up.

To do this, Courtine and his team injected a chemical solution of monoamine agonists into the rats. These chemicals trigger cell responses by binding to specific dopamine, adrenaline, and serotonin receptors located on the spinal neurons. This cocktail replaces neurotransmitters released by brainstem pathways in healthy subjects and acts to excite neurons and ready them to coordinate lower body movement when the time is right.

Five to 10 minutes after the injection, the scientists electrically stimulated the spinal cord with electrodes implanted in the outermost layer of the spinal canal, called the epidural space. "This localized epidural stimulation sends continuous electrical signals through nerve fibers to the chemically excited neurons that control leg movement. All that is left was to initiate that movement," explains Rubia van den Brand, contributing author to the study.

The innate intelligence of the spinal column

In 2009, Courtine already reported on restoring movement, albeit involuntary. He discovered that a stimulated rat spinal column -- physically isolated from the brain from the lesion down -- developed in a surprising way: It started taking over the task of modulating leg movement, allowing previously paralyzed animals to walk over treadmills. These experiments revealed that the movement of the treadmill created sensory feedback that initiated walking -- the innate intelligence of the spinal column took over, and walking essentially occurred without any input from the rat's actual brain. This surprised the researchers and led them to believe that only a very weak signal from the brain was needed for the animals to initiate movement of their own volition.

To test this theory, Courtine replaced the treadmill with a device that vertically supported the subjects, a mechanical harness did not facilitate forward movement and only came into play when they lost balance, giving them the impression of having a healthy and working spinal column. This encouraged the rats to will themselves toward a chocolate reward on the other end of the platform. "What they deemed willpower-based training translated into a fourfold increase in nerve fibers throughout the brain and spine -- a regrowth that proves the tremendous potential for neuroplasticity even after severe central nervous system injury," says Janine Heutschi, co-author in the study.

First human rehabilitation on the horizon

Courtine calls this regrowth "new ontogeny," a sort of duplication of an infant's growth phase. The researchers found that the newly formed fibers bypassed the original spinal lesion and allowed signals from the brain to reach the electrochemically-awakened spine. And the signal was sufficiently strong to initiate movement over ground -- without the treadmill -- meaning the rats began to walk voluntarily towards the reward, entirely supporting their own weight with their hind legs.

"This is the world-cup of neurorehabilitation," exclaims Courtine. "Our rats have become athletes when just weeks before they were completely paralyzed. I am talking about 100% recuperation of voluntary movement."

In principle, the radical reaction of the rat spinal cord to treatment offers reason to believe that people with spinal cord injury will soon have some options on the horizon. Courtine is optimistic that human, phase-two trials will begin in a year or two at Balgrist University Hospital Spinal Cord Injury Centre in Zurich, Switzerland. Meanwhile, researchers at EPFL are coordinating a nine million Euro project called NeuWalk that aims at designing a fully operative spinal neuroprosthetic system, much like the one used here with rats, for implanting into humans.

3DS Mod - Retirement Planning With Investment Properties

All around you, individuals are acquiring rich off home, ordering at merely the right time and reselling at higher values or with tenant hire revenue to repay a current mortgage. Are investment properties a wise decision? Or is the marketplace in a downward spiral?

As with anything, there is one-size-fits-all answer, yet acquiring information is the first step to assessing whether investment attributes usually be incorporated the supplemental pension plan.

Pros of having investment attributes are evident. Hypothetically speaking, imagine having a six-plex in a slow-changing, however successful piece of Atlanta where we billed each tenant $1,000. The monthly mortgage for the building can be $3,000 yet youll have which additional $3,000 pillow each month.

Another advantage of property investments is the good taxation kickback you might receive. If you take pleasure in having your lump sum taxation return by the end of the year, then possibly investing and offering attributes whenever we require which rapid amount of money is proper for we.

Also, there is penalty for opting out early or age laws regarding whenever you can easily start using your earnings. You dont must be rich or super business savvy to add property ownership into the pension planning curriculum. Its been named ?the equal opportunity riches builder.?

Cons of investment attributes include the no guarantee issues. Its moreover not a feasible choice for everyone due to significant deal costs. Not everyone has lots of money saved to make a substantial down payment.

Vacancies, bad tenants, repair costs and property oversupply are some of the disadvantages. Like any investment, there are lots of aspects past the control which could affect the money. For greater ensures, 401ks or IRAs should be incorporated the financial pension planning.

Your achievement in home investment attributes usually rely largely about whenever and where we buy. Money Magazine revealed the many development in Panama City, Florida and Washington state ? places like Olympia, Spokane and Mount Vernon.

Slow-changing yet profitable stores exist in Atlanta, Providence and Albuquerque. First time investors need to eliminate ex-boomtowns like Los Angeles, Santa Barbara and Las Vegas, where exorbitantly significant costs result in the marketplace unsustainable.

While downtown home can be profitable, its not advised for those who are simply just pension planning for some supplemental money.

Since the normal American moves each five to four years, and twelve million houses are available annually, why not capitalize about this trend whenever pension planning? It doesnt really take a rich person to invest and income.

If youre seeking to downsize the house following your loved ones moves out and earn some additional spending revenue, investment attributes is the proper supplemental pension plan for we!

Clean Air Council honors ?Young Lungs at Play? communities at ...

Young Lungs

?

At its 31st Annual Clean Air Council 5K Run for Clean Air on April 21st, the Council presented a certificate of recognition to communities and organizations that recently adopted the Young Lungs at Play program. This initiative assists municipalities, school districts and youth recreation and sports organizations in passing local ordinances, policies or resolutions that designate parks, playgrounds and athletic fields as tobacco-free. In support of the Young Lungs at Play initiative, the Council designated its 5K Run for Clean Air tobacco-free and announced other communities and organizations that recently took similar steps.

Youth from the Council Rock Coalition for Healthy Youth helped bring this program to their local community, by attending Parks and Recreation meetings in Northampton Township and encouraging board members to consider signage promoting tobacco-free designations in their local parks. The Parks and Recreation Board at their March meeting adopted a policy which does not allow the use of tobacco products in tobacco-free zones in township parks and recreation facilities. A tobacco-free zone is any area within 50 feet of active recreation including but not limited to the amphitheater, athletic fields, basketball courts, hockey rinks, playgrounds and tennis courts.?

Gerry Lemly, Chairman of the Parks and Recreation Board, said, ?This policy echoes what the youth sports organizations have been advocating for years. Our community already strongly supports protecting the health of our children.?It was only a matter of time that this policy be adopted.?

?The Young Lungs at Play initiative protects the health of children by creating safe, healthy and clean places for them to play?, stated Donna Foisy, Youth Coordinator for the Council Rock Coalition for Healthy Youth.?

The Surgeon General reports that secondhand smoke is a serious health hazard with no safe level of exposure. Children are at particular risk for asthma, respiratory infections and cardiovascular disease when exposed to tobacco smoke. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency classifies tobacco smoke as a Class-A carcinogen. Exposure to secondhand smoke is estimated to cause at least 38,000 deaths each year in the United States and more than one million illnesses in children.

Clean Air Council encourages smokers to become tobacco-free and recommends Pennsylvania Department of Health tobacco prevention and cessation services that can help individuals who want to quit smoking.? Resources include www.DeterminedToQuit.com and a toll-free quit line, 1-800-QUIT-NOW.

Greece, GDP to drive markets this week

By Reuters

NEW YORK -- Investors will grapple next week with major U.S. economic reports and the looming possibility of a Greek exit from the euro zone, which is likely to keep dragging on equities for weeks to come.

As contingency plans are made for Greece's possible departure from the euro zone, investors may not get a clear picture until Greece holds elections on June 17. As a result, U.S. economic statistics may grab the spotlight during the holiday-shortened week.

Major releases include consumer confidence, gross domestic product and on Friday the May non-farm payrolls report, which could provide clues on whether the economy is running out of steam or has simply hit a soft patch.

U.S. financial markets will be closed on Monday for the Memorial Day holiday.

Corporate news next week is expected to be light, with the first-quarter earnings season largely in the rear view mirror. Among S&P 500 companies, only government contractor SAIC Inc is scheduled to report next week.

"We are going to continue to worry about Europe no matter what. That is going to be a concern," said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Rockwell Global Capital in New York.

"But with the two main events in Europe not taking place for several weeks, the market will probably concentrate more on the domestic economy and the economic numbers."

But Europe will continue to be closely monitored, with equities affected by any developments in the fiscally troubled region. Increasing worries about the region, coupled with tepid U.S. data, have sent the S&P 500 down more than 5 percent for May.

But stocks rose this week. The Dow Jones industrial average gained 0.7 percent, the Standard & Poor's 500 was up 1.7 percent and the Nasdaq composite index rose 2.1 percent.

As the Greek elections draw closer, headlines from Europe could unsettle investors.

Belgian Deputy Prime Minister Didier Reynders said it would be a "grave professional error" if central banks and companies were not preparing for a Greek exit from the euro zone.

In addition, French banks, which are among the lenders most exposed to Greece, have stepped up their efforts on contingency plans for the debt-laden country leaving the euro zone, sources familiar with the situation said.

Any U.S. data in the coming week which points to an economy pulling out of the doldrums could divert attention from Europe and provide investors an incentive to jump into stocks, which have become cheap during the recent pullback.

Analysts have pointed to the 1,275 to 1,280 range for the benchmark S&P index, just below the 200-day moving average, as a key level of support the market is likely to challenge.

"You are looking at 1,277 on the downside. The market will test it, but when it gets there it is going to hold because there is a lot of money on the sideline that needs to be put to work," said Ken Polcari, managing director at ICAP Equities in New York.

"People are using that number as the entry point, so you will find stability at that level."

Another possible silver lining for investors may be the strengthening of the dollar, which has been a safe haven during the euro zone's sovereign debt troubles.

The dollar index is up nearly 5 percent for the month, and some analysts feel it could not only help equities stabilize but spur a move higher.

"With sovereign debt default now a possibility, and some form of dissolution of the euro also possible, the hidden positive may be for the U.S. dollar, and U.S. dollar-denominated assets," said Brad Lipsig, vice president of investments and senior portfolio manager at UBS Financial Services in New York.

"Capital inflows could support U.S. real estate prices, which could help stabilize U.S. banks," he said. "All of this could help support U.S. stock prices during a difficult period for Europe's economy. It's not inconceivable that this dynamic could trigger a rally in the U.S. stock market."

Below,?CNBC's Courtney Reagan looks ahead to what are likely to be next week's top business and financial stories.

Study finds emissions from widely used cookstoves vary with use

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. The smoke rising from a cookstove fills the air with the tantalizing aroma of dinner and a cloud of pollutants and particles that threaten both health and the environment. How families in developing countries use their cookstoves has a big effect on emissions from those stoves, and laboratory emission tests don't accurately reflect real-world operations, according to a study by University of Illinois researchers.

Biomass-burning cookstoves are used throughout the developing world, using wood, agricultural waste and other organic matter as fuel. They are also a major cause of poor air quality in the regions where use is prevalent. Policymakers and nonprofit organizations are working to develop and distribute "improved" cookstoves, for example, adding insulation or chimneys to reduce emissions. They are especially concerned with fine particles that are emitted, which cause health problems and also affect climate.

Much like automobiles undergo emission testing before hitting the market, cookstoves are tested in the lab before distribution to gauge how effective improvements are at reducing emissions. But if the conditions aren't the same as how people use them at home, then the changes that designers make to the stove may not actually reduce emissions in the field.

"The understanding of how people really use combustion devices is important if we're going to optimize that device," said study leader Tami Bond, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at U. of I. "In the laboratory, where tests are conducted by trained people, there's a lot more attention to operating the stove carefully. At home, people are not as concerned with its operation; they're more concerned with making a meal. So they operate in ways that are non-optimal."

However, these variations in use are masked by the current methods of testing, which use only average values to determine emissions sort of like a snapshot of the stove in operation, not accounting for variation in use. Bond's team developed a real-time analysis technique called Patterns of Real-Time Emissions Data (PaRTED) that allows researchers to compare emissions under different operating conditions and to measure how often a stove operates under certain conditions in the field.

"Wood burning is like a dance," Bond said. "A movie gives you a better understanding than a photograph. This is a way to make movies of how users change as they make fires, and that can help people understand emission rates and make better stoves."

Using PaRTED, Bond's team tested cookstoves in use in a village in Honduras and compared the field results to lab results. The researchers found that operation under less-than-ideal conditions produces the highest emissions. They also found that in the field, stoves are rarely used under optimal conditions, a scenario not reproduced in laboratory tests.

The team compared emission profiles, or the chemical makeup of the smoke, from traditional cookstoves and two types of improved stoves: insulated stoves and stoves with chimneys. They found that although stoves with an insulated combustion chamber could increase overall efficiency, they did not significantly reduce emissions per mass of fuel burned. Chimneys did reduce certain types of particle emissions but chimneys did not cut down on black particles, the type most harmful to climate.

"Our measurements confirm that changes in stove design cause a change in the way they operate," Bond said. "I think people weren't aware that changes in design actually change the profile of the emissions rather than just reducing emissions."

Next, the researchers will use PaRTED analysis to study variations in cookstove use in different regions of the world. Bond hopes that PaRTED and this study will inform future testing protocols for cookstoves in the lab, enabling researchers to more accurately test under realistic conditions and providing insight into a whole range of possible use scenarios.

"Insulated and chimneyed stoves are a step in the right direction, but not as far as we need to go to get really clean stoves," Bond said. "The next step is to identify both the patterns of stove operation and the factors that lead to the characteristic profile of operation so that those can be brought into the lab and optimized. The cookstove world is moving toward having emission standards. It would be best if those standards were relevant to real operations."

The researchers published their study in the journal Environmental Science & Technology. The National Science Foundation and the Environmental Protection Agency supported this work. Postdoctoral research associate Yanju Chen and Bond group alumnus Christoph Roden were co-authors of the paper.

Asia stocks rise amid hopes for China stimulus

BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stock markets moved higher after a choppy start Tuesday as hopes for new measures to boost China's economy outweighed worries about the health of Spanish banks and their potential to worsen Europe's debt crisis.

Concerns about Spain's banks have grown since Bankia, the country's fourth-largest lender, said Friday it needed ?19 billion ($23.8 billion) in state aid to shore itself up against bad loans ? largely from real estate gone sour.

That magnified fears of a possible debt implosion in Europe's weaker economies ? starting with Greece, which will run out of money in the coming days without an emergency loan.

But analysts said investors were emboldened to scoop up oversold shares because of hopes that China is on the verge of taking action to shore up its fatigued economy.

Stan Shamu, market strategist at IG Markets in Melbourne, said there are increasing expectations that China will relax monetary policy and also announce fiscal stimulus measures.

"This has been a predominant theme since Premier Wen Jiabao's comments showing commitment to keep China's growth from stalling," he said.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 0.2 percent to 8,610.89 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 0.5 percent to 18,899.61.

South Korea's Kospi added 1.3 percent to 1,848.96 after being closed Monday for a public holiday. Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan and mainland China also rose. Indonesia's fell.

Negative sentiment was also slightly assuaged by recent polls suggested an upcoming election in Greece might result in a government willing to stick to a highly unpopular austerity program.

Sticking to its austerity commitments will enable Greece to qualify for an urgently needed international bailout to avoid defaulting on its massive debts and remain in the euro currency union.

Among individual stocks, Chinese automaker BYD Co. rebounded 5.4 percent after tumbling the day before on reports that one of its electric taxis burst into flames after being hit by a sports car, killing three. The speeding car rear-ended one of BYD's 300 e6 taxis in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, raising fears about the safety of electric cars.

Steve Man, an auto analyst at Nomura in Hong Kong, said it appeared to be an isolated incident because the electric taxis have been running mostly without problems since they hit the streets of Shenzhen about two years ago.

Japan's Renesas Electronics Corp. plunged 18 percent amid speculation it will announce massive job cuts as its business struggles. The semiconductor maker Monday announced a deal to work with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. to produce chips in an effort to cut costs.

Later Tuesday, Wall Street will reopen after a public holiday. Traders will also digest monthly data on German inflation and U.S. consumer confidence.

Benchmark oil for July delivery was up 36 cents to $91.22 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 20 cents at $90.86 on Friday, the last day it settled in New York.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.2535 from $1.2518 late Friday in New York. The dollar fell to 79.50 yen from 79.66 yen.

Margie Evans | My Family Tree is Full of Nuts

Margie Evans was suppose to be married to my one of my great uncles, George Rice Vanzant who was born 19 May 1894 in Pennsylvania and he died 28 July 1939 and is buried in Edgemont Cemetery, Anniston, AL

As the story told to me by Aunt Margaret Epps Scogins is he was a stage hand and he met Margie. She was and actress and she was huge. He brought her to their home in Piedmont, AL and she was so big that she could not sit on the front porch swing.

They were supposedly married and lived in Anniston, AL for a while. She did not like it and left to go back to New York. They married in NY.

I wrote The Shubert Archive?, 149 West 45St Street, New York, NY 10036 to see if they had any records on a actress Margie Evans and this is what I got back.

Fat Margie Longs For Real Romance

300-pounder in ?Artists and Models? Can?t Find Some One To Love Her.

N.Y. Review 1/14/28

Everybody may love a fat man but no one seems to want a fat woman. Witness the plight of Margie Evans.

Several years ago Margie made a bid for the movies and landed as the fat lady in the comics. After the first glamour of the screen wore off, Margie turned her thoughts to more tender subjects than the hurling of custard pies. She discovered that her girth- she was known in the movies as the perfect 56- was an obstacle in the matrimonial race.

Margie began to reduce and did it so effectively that she lost her movie contract last spring. She then joined ?Artists and Models? and now has received word that if she loses any more weight she will not be able to play the heavy lady much longer.

When Margie first started to reduce she weighed a trifle over 450 pounds and was down to 380 when seh left the movies. She has lost an additional 80 pounds since being with the revue at the Winter Garden and now is faced with the decision of giving up her romantic aspirations or putting on additional avoirdupois.

She would like to know if there aren?t any men who admire slightly plump ladies?

My note: evidentally they were because according to my family they married in NY and moved to Anniston, Alabama where she became very unhappy and moved back to NY. I have a picture of her and will post it another time when I take time to load all my pictures here. If anybody has any information on Margie please contact me at SadieMaesAttic@aol.com

(AP) ? A NATO airstrike killed eight members of a family, including children, according to Afghan officials who claim that such attacks damage the civilian population's trust in international troops who have been fighting in the country for more than a decade.

The U.S.-led coalition said it was aware of the allegation and was investigating the attack late Saturday in a remote part of Paktia province.

The killings of civilians by foreign forces has been a major irritant in President Hamid Karzai's relationship with his international partners. The Afghan leader warned earlier this month that civilian casualties could undermine a strategic partnership with the U.S. that is to govern long-term relations after most international troops withdraw by the end of 2014.

NATO also reported Sunday that four coalition service members were killed in separate roadside bomb attacks Saturday in southern Afghanistan, bringing to 166 the number of NATO deaths so far this year.

The British Ministry of Defense said one of its soldiers was killed Saturday in an explosion in the Nahr-e Saraj region of southern Helmand province. The nationalities of the others killed were not released.

Rohullah Samon, a spokesman for the provincial governor, said Mohammad Shafi, his wife and their six children died in an airstrike around 8 p.m. in Suri Khail village of Gurda Saria district.

"Shafi was not a Taliban. He was not in any opposition group against the government. He was a villager," Samon said. "Right now, we are working on this case to find out the ages of their children and how many of them are boys and girls."

Karzai said he has sent a delegation to the village to investigate the incident.

NATO also said it was investigating.

"We acknowledge that coalition forces were conducting an operation in Paktia province against a large number of insurgents last night and we also are aware of the media reports today of civilian casualty allegations in that area," Army Lt. Col. Jimmie Cummings, a coalition spokesman, said.

Taliban attacks have killed more civilians than foreign forces, but public anger over the issue is usually directed at the international community.

Tensions spiked after Afghan officials reported that 18 civilians had died recently in four airstrikes in Logar, Kapisa, Badghis and Helmand provinces. That led Karzai to issue his warning earlier this month.

"If the lives of Afghan people are not safe, the signing of the strategic partnership has no meaning," Karzai's office said.

Last year was the deadliest on record for civilians in the Afghan war, with 3,021 killed as insurgents ratcheted up violence with suicide attacks and roadside bombs, the United Nations said in its latest report on civilian deaths. The U.N. attributed 77 percent of the deaths to insurgent attacks and 14 percent to actions by international and Afghan troops. Nine percent of cases were classified as having an unknown cause.

Elsewhere, two civilians were killed Sunday when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb in Marjah district of Helmand province in the south, provincial spokesman Daud Ahmadi said.

Thanks for Visiting Washington State - That'll Be $180,000

Some months ago, we here at the Tax Foundation first heard about the strange case of Pete Vegas and his six-figure tax bill from the state of Washington. Pete runs an agribusiness company that does business mostly in California, Arkansas, and Texas, although they ship their products nationwide. He explained his predicament in a recent op-ed:

As president of a national food company, I thought I had seen it all. Until, that is, the state of Washington decided to send me a $180,000 tax bill for simply visiting the the state. I understand that states are starved for revenue these days, but Washington has gone too far. Based on one visit over a seven-year period, it decided that my company, Sage V Foods, should be required to pay business and occupation taxes. Washington made that determination even though Sage V Foods has no employees, no property, no sales offices and no inventory in the state - nothing.

[...]

Washington has a sneaky way of catching companies in its tax trap. A few weeks after one of our trucks stopped at a weigh station during a routine delivery, we received a questionnaire in the mail from the Department of Revenue. The letter seemed innocuous enough, but it absolutely wasn't.

It asked whether one of our employees visited the state once a year for business purposes. We answered yes, that was possible, and Washington pounced. It audited us and imposed seven years? worth of taxes, interest and penalties. Washington claims Sage V Foods has a substantial connection to the state because we, on very rare occasions, cross its borders to do business. That?s outrageous.

Pete also talked about his case with us recently on the Tax Policy Podcast. Listen here!

Credit Card Debt Decreases, But Cards Still Used Widely

Consumers throughout the nation appear to be bettering their payment habits for credit cards, and in turn, improving their credit scores, as a report by Demos indicates average?credit card debt dropped in the first few months of 2012 compared to the last report conducted in 2008.

According to the report, which yielded responses from nearly 1,000 low- and middle-income Americans with credit cards, average credit card debt declined to $7,145 this year from $9,887 in 2008. This dip occurred despite two in five of these households surveyed using credit cards to pay for basic living expenses, including utilities and insurance.

Some bills these Americans used credit cards to pay for contributed to their debt, the report found. Unemployment and medical bills accounted for a considerable portion of debt among respondents. Medical credit card debt this year totaled $1,678 per person, while roughly five in six respondents stated they have taken on debt due to expenses incurred while jobless.

[Credit Score Tool: Get your free credit score and report card from Credit.com]

Check Your Credit For FreeThe report was released on the third anniversary of the Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility and Disclosure Act, which was passed to protect consumers from fees and penalties from card issuers. Amy Traub, senior policy analyst for Demos, told CNNMoney this legislation hasn?t done enough to protect consumers.

?The Credit Card Act clearly didn?t solve the underlying problem of households needing to rely on debt to make ends meet,? she told the news source.

Travis Plunkett, legislative director of the Consumer Federation of America, told the source debt can be avoided, even among low- and middle-income consumers, by using credit cards in the right way.

?The old rule of thumb is that you want to use credit to invest in education or buy something that will help you in the future, not for necessities or expendable items like groceries,? Plunkett said.

[Free Resource: Check your credit score and report card for free with Credit.com]

One major theme of the Demos report was that credit scores were on the rise for more than 60 percent of those surveyed, which could indicate more Americans are using their credit cards responsibly and paying down their balances.

Finding the right credit card depends largely on consumers? specific situations, so spending the time to research what cards are available can be beneficial to their finances.
