Brad Pitt donates $100K for gay marriage effort

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Brad Pitt has agreed to donate $100,000 to help the Human Rights Campaign raise money for its efforts to support same-sex marriage initiatives in several states.

The nation's largest gay rights group announced Wednesday that Pitt agreed to match contributions from the group's members up to $100,000.

In an e-mail to members of the Human Rights Campaign, Pitt wrote that it's "unbelievable" that people's relationships will be put to a vote on Election Day.

Same-sex marriage will be on the ballot in Maryland, Maine, Minnesota and Washington state.

The Washington, D.C.-based Human Rights Campaign says it has spent $8 million to push for marriage equality for gays and lesbians over the past two years, including $5 million in the four ballot measures this year.

Early childhood presents one of the most promising opportunities for addressing the problem of obesity, according to Dr. Elsie Taveras.

Not only is interaction with the health care system at its highest from the prenatal period through the second year of life, but early childhood also is a time when healthy choices can be made on behalf of children, she explained at the annual meeting of the Obesity Society.

?This is a time when children are not making autonomous choices in eating and physical activity. ? This is a time when we can get children and families ? but especially children ? on a healthy weight trajectory,? said Dr. Taveras, a pediatrician who is codirector of the obesity prevention program in the department of population medicine at Harvard Medical School, Boston.

Since monitoring at this stage is fairly continuous, healthy practices can be established and risks can be identified early, she added, noting that prevention is much easier than management.

The importance of prevention is underscored by 2007-2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data showing that 17% of children aged 2-19 years in the United States are obese, with a disproportionate effect on racial and ethnic minorities. As of 2010, obesity affected 14% of non-Hispanic white children, 24% of black children, and 22% of Hispanic children.

?The other thing that?s starting to gain more attention in the national discourse is that the obesity epidemic has not spared even the youngest of the nation?s children. Almost 10% of infants and toddlers have high weight for length, slightly more than 20% of those aged 2-5 years are overweight or obese, and approximately one to five are carrying extra weight when they enter kindergarten,? she said.

Fortunately, quality data exist to help guide efforts to address obesity in these early childhood years, she said.

Destination Heartland! That?s where savvy investors should be heading according to the latest rankings of the best real estate markets for investing in single family homes as rental properties. Investment opportunities still boom in America?s major metro areas such as Dallas, Atlanta, Phoenix and Minneapolis, but don?t overlook places like Lafayette, LA or Erie, PA.

The quarterly rankings data points to Small Town, U.S.A?cities with populations between 200,000 and 500,000?as good places to invest as well. ?Many of these markets not only have unemployment rates well below the national average, but they show strong job growth and housing prices have bottomed out,? says Ingo Winzer , president and founder of Local Market Monitor (LMM).

Winzer says that the smaller markets are ?great places to rent out single-family homes because strong economic growth can quickly absorb the existing housing options.?

The top ten smaller markets in order are Lafayette, La.; Fort Wayne, Ind.; Erie, Pa.; Corpus Christi, Texas; Houma, La.; Fayetteville, Ariz.; Tyler, Texas; Longview, Texas; Lincoln, Neb.; and Ann Arbor, Mich.

All of these markets have low ?risk premiums.? The lower risk premiums of the smaller markets make them a safer investment.

?Investors should approach our top 20 large markets with caution,? advises Winzer. ?Even though the higher risk premiums mean investors may be able to get a higher return relative to their investment, 18 of these markets are in California, Florida, Nevada or Michigan, all areas that have suffered from an overabundance of housing, a poor local economy, or both,? Winzer notes.

?Many of the California markets were over-developed during the housing boom because home prices were still affordable compared to the big coastal markets; lower prices on the coast now diminish that attraction. The Florida and Nevada markets were heavily developed for second-home buyers, now evaporated, leaving them with too much supply for local demand to absorb. In Detroit, the population is just outright shrinking,? he says.

His advice: Don?t hesitate to look at smaller markets for investment. That?s the same advice that HomeVestors? co-president, David Hicks, is offering. ?We often see that the smaller markets are the best-kept secret of investing, for example in Fort Wayne, IN or Lincoln, NE or Ann Arbor, MI. Many of these smaller markets offer a consistent demand for rental properties. Investors can discover for themselves that the big city isn?t the only place with a great deal for investors,? he says.

Well, silly me. I just realized it's October which is ?Vegan Month of Food.... better late than never?
What's Vegan MOFO?? You basically write as much as possible about veganism and/or vegan food- recipes, stories, favorite products, etc. From the website:
The idea is to write as much as you can all month, about vegan food. The blog entries can be about anything food related ? your love of tongs, your top secret tofu pressing techniques, the first time your mom cooked vegan for you, vegan options in Timbuktu ? you get the idea, right?

Now, I'm not vegan (though I try to eat vegan fairly often) but it is something that is important to me and I try to do my best to limit items like cheese and dairy. I do eat eggs somewhat often (thank you chickens!). I don't drink milk and I rarely indulge in things like yogurt, sour cream, etc. We use a lot of vegan?substitutes?in our house like Vegenaise and Earth Balance vegan butter. I just love examining and making vegan meals because of the simplicity of it all. Of course there is vegan?junk food?and highly?processed?vegan options, but the vegan meals that really get me goin are the simple, fresh ones that use just a few ingredients. ?Here are some vegan recipes I been collecting on Pinterest. I can't wait to try them.?

Lolo Jones selected to US bobsled team

Lolo Jones agreed to try bobsledding because she needed something to take her mind off the rigors of her Olympic track season.

Three weeks later, she's got a spot on the national team.

Jones, a two-time Olympic hurdler, was one of 24 athletes selected to the U.S. bobsled team Thursday. She's one of six women's push athletes selected, a group that also includes Olympic sprinting gold medalist Tianna Madison.

"I just came out here and kind of needed to get away from track for a bit, kind of wanted to get some motivation," Jones told The Associated Press. "I thought coming out here with the other girls that we could help each other, we could benefit from one another. I could help them with their speed and they could help me with my strength. And just being around them, hearing their goals gave me new goals and refreshed me."

Jones was fourth at the London Games, the second time she's gone to an Olympics and come home without a hurdles medal. She was the favorite for gold at Beijing in 2008, then hit the next-to-last hurdle and finished seventh.

She still plans to compete in hurdles at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. Only now, a trip to the 2014 Sochi Games ? in a bobsled ? might come first.

"This is a breath of fresh air ? cool, very cool, cold air," Jones said.

Jones and Madison were among a small number of track athletes invited to Lake Placid for bobsled's push championships this month by U.S. coach Todd Hays. He believed veteran Olympians would, if nothing else, help some of the team's younger competitors and raise team morale.

But Hays also had another idea in mind ? recruitment. Bobsled has long sought athletes from the track world, with their strength and explosiveness considered the perfect combination to get a sled going quickly down an icy chute.

Madison, who was part of a world-record-setting 4x100-meter relay Olympic win in London, and Jones fit what Hays was looking for. Neither had done any real training since the London Games, so the last three weeks have been hectic for Madison and Jones.

"Once they were revved up, things started clicking for both of us," Jones said. "It kind of overwhelmed us quite quickly."

Both bring star power. Jones brings an element of celebrity as well.

This summer in London, Jones competed amid criticism, even from some teammates, that she received more attention and endorsements than her accomplishments on the track warranted. One of the things she said attracted her to bobsledding was that, traditionally, it's the pilot ? not the push athlete ? who gets virtually all the attention after races.

If that holds true, Jones might be thrilled.

"When I came here, I didn't want any distractions," Jones said.

Madison ran the opening leg of the gold-winning relay in London, one that smashed the record held by East Germany for 27 years.

Other women in the push-athlete mix are 2010 Olympian Emily Azevedo, world championship medalist Katie Eberling, Lake Placid start-record-holder Aja Evans and former Cal track athlete Cherrelle Garrett.

Three women's pilots are on the roster: reigning world championships bronze medalist Elana Meyers will drive USA-1, Jamie Greubel will drive USA-2 and Jazmine Fenlator will be at the controls of USA-3. Coaches will likely determine next week which three push athletes work with the drivers for the first World Cup event of the season. Because that's six women vying for three roles, there's no guarantee that Jones or Madison would start on the World Cup circuit.

The men's roster had few surprises. World and Olympic champion Steven Holcomb will drive USA-1, with Nick Cunningham in USA-2 and Cory Butner in USA-3.

Push athletes Steve Langton, Justin Olsen and Curt Tomasevicz helped the "Night Train" sled driven by Holcomb to the world title last year, and all are back this season. Coaches chose nine other men's push athletes as well: Adam Clark, Johnny Quinn, Chuck Berkeley, Laszlo Vandracsek, Chris Fogt, Dallas Robinson, Jesse Beckom, Andreas Drbal and Nic Taylor.

The U.S. skeleton roster will be announced next week after team selection races end in Park City, Utah. World Cup racing for bobsled and skeleton opens in Lake Placid on Nov. 8.

"It was definitely a thrill," Jones said. "This is definitely the first time I've made a team and I haven't had to cross the finish line and look at the scoreboard."

Not only will this give you a great presence on LinkedIn but it will also help you been found when prospects are searching for the products and services you provide.

Many people don?t realise it but LinkedIn is now considered an authority site by most search engines, and when your potential clients go looking for you and your company, they?re as likely to find your LinkedIn profile as they are to find your company website ? so do yourself and the business justice.

A CULTURE ADDICTED TO ?SELF? ? Comments? - Revival School

Yesterday, I read a report about an Ohio State University study involving 900 adults ranging in age from 18 to 90 which claimed that young Americans place such a high value on their sense of self-worth that they crave praise and compliments more than food, friendship, and sex! The study also observed that this craving is akin to an addiction. It is insatiable?

The participants in the study are not all narcissists, of course,
but they?re kissin? cousins.

The professor who conducted the study identified the 1969 book
The Psychology of Self-Esteem as the launching point for a
generation of Americans obsessed with self-esteem. He concluded
that the obsession is only going to get worse ? ?as each new
generation enters a culture that puts a premium on self-worth,
younger Americans spend more time craving and searching for
self-esteem boosts?and less time thinking about others. All that
time spent thinking about yourself not only contributes to
depression, but it makes society a less kind and gentle place.?

The seismic shift that began in 1969 has resulted in the tsunamis
of Facebook, Pinterest, YouTube, reality TV shows and life-
enhancement church services. Americans just can?t seem to get
enough of being true to self, expressing self, fulfilling self, improving
self and advancing self. This addiction has had an enormous impact
on the Christian community. Choosing a church to attend is no
longer a matter of finding where the Word of God is taught and
where people are striving to live in a manner that pleases God. It
is now a matter of finding a church that has the best programs,
preferred music, and activities.

American Christians have become consumers rather than
practitioners. We look for the most enjoyable services, the most
convenient schedules, the most engaging presentations, and the
programs that fulfill our desires to the greatest degree. We seem
drawn to the churches that are most like the world. Our primary
concern about church is not how we can serve the church body,
but how the church body can serve us.

Churches that are preaching that Christians are deserving of and
entitled to good things, happiness, blessings, and personal fulfill-
ment are bursting at the seams. Churches that preach poorness
in spirit, mournfulness for sin, meekness, purity in heart, and a
hunger for righteousness, are struggling to find people willing to
listen. Are we witnessing the fulfillment of Paul?s warning to Timothy,
?For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine,
but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears,
they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their
ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.?

We can?t be hungry for righteousness and addicted to self at the
same time.

Not every debt can be discharged, which means the debts that are not discharged must be paid in full.? Bankruptcy discharge allows a debtor to be free from certain debts, meaning that the debtor is not required to pay debts that have been discharged.? Once the discharge has been instated creditors are no longer allowed to have contact with the debtor.? Even though a debtor is not responsible for the debts that have been discharged, the debtor is still responsible to the secured creditors for valid liens.

Timing of a Discharge

A discharge is filed at a different time under each chapter.? Under Chapter 7, which is liquidation, the court will rule the discharge quickly to keep a complaint from being filed, which is usually around four months.? Under Chapters 11, 12 and 13, the discharge will be as soon as the debtor repays all the debts under the plan that was decided by the court.? Since Chapter 12 and 13 are a payment based plan that typically last between three to five years, the discharge will be made four years after the initial filing.? If a debtor does not adhere to the rules of attending the financial management course under Chapters 7 and 13, the discharge will be overruled.? There are very reasons for a debtor to get out of the financial management course requirement.? They are; there are not enough courses near them, they are incapacitated or they are on military duty.

What Does the Debtor Do To Get a Discharge?

The debtor will receive a discharge when all payments are made unless there is something that they have not followed during the bankruptcy process.? It is Federal Law that a copy of the discharge is sent to all the creditors, the U.S. trustee, the case trustee and the attorneys of the trustees and the debtors.? Creditors are not allowed to collect from the debtors once they receive the discharge letter.? If they try to collect from the debtors after the discharge, they will be punished.? If the secretary forgets to send a copy of the discharge to someone, it does not mean that the debtor is not discharged.?

Retroware TV Famicom: An Introduction

The Famicom is one of my favourite consoles of all time. It?s hard to nail down exactly why I love the Famicom so much, seen as how us North Americans got pretty much the same thing (albeit in a much boxier and?greyer?variation) as the Nintendo Entertainment System only 2 years after Nintendo released the Family computer in Japan. While the Famicom was designed to look very much like a video game system, absurd and futuristic with its off-white and red color scheme and tiny (in comparison) candy-like hard-wired controllers, the NES was designed to blend in underneath our TV sets with our VCRs, Beta machines, and Laser Disc players. This was no accident. Nintendo of America was very intent on marketing the NES, initially at least, as a toy. No, it was not a video game console.

Home video game consoles nearly went extinct the early 80s, a victim of over saturation and lax quality control. This was not a video game. it was an Entertainment System, it was a toy! It came with a little robot and a bunch of weird gyro disks! Nintendo?s sly cover story worked, and by the late 80s kids in Canada and the US were ?playing with power? by the millions.

With the boom came the second coming of the video game. Nintendo and the NES single handedly saved the home video game and drove the first rusty nail into the coffin of the arcade machine. I got my Nintendo in 1988 when I was six years old, so its suffice to say that I grew up not knowing anything else. Pre-internet, all I knew of the Family Computer were the occasional thumbnail photo and blurb I saw in Nintendo Power or Game Players Magazine. I believe it is the alien nature of the Family Computer, or Famicom as it is officially abbreviated, that drew me towards it as an adult. Many of the games are nearly identical to the games I played growing up and still play today, while many have differences both large and small. Still others never escaped the land of the rising sun and were completely new experiences to me. The Family Computer was released by Nintendo in Japan in 1983. The original model featured hard-wired controllers and RF as the only output option.

Spurred by the success of Nintendo?s early arcade titles, the Famicom was devised as a direct connection for Nintendo into Japanese living rooms, bypassing the need to produce, distribute and develop expensive arcade hardware. The early Famicom titles were simple arcade style games, near perfect adaptations of many of their most popular arcade titles. The Famicom?s launch games were in fact all arcade ports; Popeye, Donkey Kong, and Donkey Kong A unique aspect of the Famicom compared to other home video game consoles of the time, and the reason for its long life span and varied library of games, was the versatility of the hardware itself. An Atari game from 1978 is near identical in both appearance and sound to any game made in the waining days of the console. The Famicom however gave the opportunity for developers to improve their software without having to change the actual hardware. Popeye is a vastly different game from Castlevania III, although they both play on the same machine.

The Famicom was released 2 years before the Nintendo Entertainment System, and while Nintendo ceased producing the NES in 1995, Nintendo of Japan sold new Famicoms until 2003, giving the system an astonishing 20 year lifespan. The Famicom should rightfully be given the title the saviour of video games as we know it, as every advance that the NES made was built on a foundation the Famicom created. Nintendo and the NES may have saved the video game industry, but the Famicom was the boot in the mud that enabled them to take those first strides on the path to legend.

Paul Ryan Urges Early Voting in Ohio

BELMONT, Ohio-Paul Ryan rallied a soggy, but hardy crowd at a campground here after a heavy downpour, twice urging those gathered to vote early.

"One thing Belmont County can do: if you head to early voting at your Belmont Board of Elections the one thing you can do is elect a man named Mitt Romney who will end this war on coal and allow us to keep these good paying jobs," Ryan said, standing in front of a barn at the Valley View campgrounds with the words "Victory in Ohio" on a banner hanging behind him.

He had the same message at the end of his brief remarks, thanking the enthusiastic group-many dressed in ponchos and hunting gear-for "listening and enduring the rain," adding not to "forget early voting."

There's a reason for all the urging: no Republican has gotten to the White House without taking Ohio and in 2008 Barack Obama beat John McCain here in Belmont County by a mere 880 votes. In 2004, John Kerry beat George W. Bush in Belmont County by 1,987 votes, but ended up losing the state and the election.

Polls in the state still show the president ahead, but also show a tightening between the two candidates. A Fox News poll released Friday had Obama with 46 percent to Romney's 43 percent.

The GOP vice presidential nominee didn't hesitate to try to connect with the audience of several hundred, reminding them he spent "four great formative years" at Miami University of Ohio and managing to fit in three hunting references in his 15 minute speech.

"I've chased your deer around this state as well, it's a lot like where I come from Wisconsin," Ryan, an avid bow hunter, said. "I've got to think of some deer I reckon right through that draw right there in those woods. I haven't been able to bow hunt this year yet?I have my phone is camouflage and blaze orange, it reminds me that I get to take my daughter for her first gun hunt for deer this year after we have elected Mitt Romney the next president of the United States."

Earlier Saturday, Ryan campaigned in Pennsylvania hitting the president on his energy policy. Later this afternoon, Ryan travels to a fundraiser in Northern New Jersey before two events in Iowa and one in Colorado Sunday.

Vegan and veg joints are opening all over Vancouver these days. The Acorn (my favourite) opened on Main this summer and serves epicurean veg, vegan and raw fare. Meanwhile all-veg restaurants Heirloom (Granville) and the Parker (nestled between Chinatown and Strathcona) opened this fall. I just learned about another vegan dining option in Kits: Indigo Food Caf? at 2589 West 16th Ave.

The Straight reviewed Indigo?s high tea, judging it to be a prime opportunity to crook a pinky?.and try most of the cafe?s vegan and raw menu in one sitting.

From The Straight?s Steven Hui:

?We ordered the Mermaid kelp-noodle salad, collard roll-ups filled with avocado-corn salsa, and buckwheat cr?pes?the latter being one of the few menu items that are not completely raw. Featuring excellent-quality ingredients as diverse as dulse flakes and enoki mushrooms, these dishes were both fresh and filling. For dessert, we shared the toothsome cake trio?a tart-sized berry cheesecake, coconut-cream pie, and chocolate ganache.

While I don?t consider myself a raw-food enthusiast, the meal?s impeccable presentation, interesting textures, and vibrant flavours had me excited about coming back to try Indigo?s raw vegan cheese fondue ($16 per person) and high tea ($27 per person), both of which require a reservation and a minimum of two people.?

As Hui notes, Indigo also serves vegan fondue. I tend to find that vegan food tastes best when it invents new dishes within its dietary parameters, rather than mimics non-vegan items. But that?s just me. You?ll have to head over, dip some bread into the creamy cashew, garlic, lemon, and nutritional yeast mixture, and let me know.

New Romney Ad Push Before Election Day

With the general election just weeks away, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and his supporters are releasing more advertising spots for television, radio, and newspapers. Here is a closer look at the newest pro-Romney ads to be released.

Spanish-language Radio Ad

Mitt Romney's campaign has the backing of comedian Paul Rodriguez this election season. He has given his voice to a Spanish-language radio ad for the Romney campaign, according to Fox News. Rodriguez can be heard in the ad saying, "President Obama has taken us down the road of unemployment, more poverty and an exorbitant debt that puts that promise at risk. The question we must ask ourselves is: do we want to leave our children a country with less opportunities?"

Spanish-language TV Ad

Immigration groups have called for the Romney campaign to take down a new Spanish-language television ad, according to The Huffington Post. Frank Sharry, the executive director of America's Voice, said that, "The only permanent solution we know Romney will advocate is 'self-deportation,' which is code for a purge of millions of hard-working Latino immigrant families." The ad states that Romney worked with Democrats on immigration reform while governor of Massachusetts, and criticizes President Obama for failing to fulfill his 2008 campaign promise of comprehensive immigration reform.

Billy Graham Print Ad

Christian evangelist Billy Graham has taken some steps to endorse Mitt Romney, though he hasn't stated his public support for the Republican candidate specifically. Rev. Graham has taken out a print ad in the Wall Street Journal encouraging people to vote for conservative candidates, according to ABC News. A portion of the ad reads, "I urge you to vote for those who protect the sanctity of life and support the biblical definition of marriage between a man and a woman." Libyan Islamist says he was at Benghazi attacks

"Just because someone is there doesn't mean they were behind it."

Abu Khattala denied being a leader of Ansar al-Shariah, but said he was friendly with the group and knew its membership well.

A U.S. official said there may be more than person taking a lead role in the group.

"Ansar al-Shariah is a factionalized militant group without one home address," the official told Reuters. "There may be several military commanders playing a role in its activities."

Abu Khattala said that on the night of September 11, he received a phone call telling him that an attack on the U.S. consulate was in progress and that he then went to the scene.

"I arrived at the street parallel to the consulate and waited for other brigade leaders to show me the way to the buildings," he said. "I arrived at the scene just like the others did -- to see what was happening."

Denies leading attack
Abu Khattala denied sanctioning or leading the attack, but said he understood the anger that fueled it.

A crudely made movie that mocks the Prophet Mohammad, filmed in California and circulated on the Internet, has helped generate violent protests across the Islamic world.

U.S. officials have said they believe militants used the protests as cover to carry out an armed assault on the U.S. diplomatic compound and a building that was supposed to be a safe house.

"The film which insulted the Prophet was a direct attack on our values and if America wants good relations with the Muslim world it needs to do so with respect," Abu Khattala said. "If they want to do it with force, they will be met with force."

He said that after he arrived at the consulate, he began to help direct traffic with other militia leaders.

"People were crashing into each other because of the chaos and there was sporadic shooting," he said.

Abu Khattala said he called the commanders of Benghazi's security forces -- the Feb. 17 brigade and the Supreme Security Committee -- and told them to remove their cars and people from the consulate to avoid clashes.

"Soon after I made my calls, one of the guards told me that four men were detained in a building inside the compound who had been shooting at the demonstrators," he said.

"By the time I arrived at the building the men had already escaped. At that point I left the scene and didn't return."

Little is known about Abu Khattala, who hails from Benghazi.

Abu Khattala, who is unmarried, said he went to public schools in Libya but did not attend university or community college. He said he was imprisoned for a total of 10 years for "knowing suspected personalities." He refused to elaborate.

"I've also never left the country," he said when asked if he received any education or training abroad.

Abu Khattala said he formed the Obeidah al-Jarrah brigade at the beginning of the armed revolt which toppled Muammar Gaddafi last year.

The shadowy armed militia was blamed in the killing last July of military chief Abdelfattah Younes, a former Gaddafi loyalist who had defected to the rebels.

Younes was involved in the 1969 coup that brought Gaddafi to power. He was interior minister before he defected and took a senior position in the rebellion in February.

Some rebels, especially hard-line conservative Islamist fighters who were persecuted under Gaddafi, were never happy to serve under a man who had been so close to Gaddafi.

Abu Khattala was questioned by Libyan authorities but released because no evidence directly linked him to the killing. He said he later broke up his militia group.

"After the revolution Obeidah al-Jarrah was disbanded because we were a fighting group and the war was over in Benghazi," he said.

But many members of Obeidah al-Jarrah are known to have joined other brigades, including Ansar al-Shariah in Benghazi.
